The design inspiration for the CETC Research Institute came from the local Hui-style residential spaces. The design team adopted the distinctive courtyard-style layout, subtly fusing interior and outdoor spatial order, and highlighting the spirit of "harmonious combination". The atrium is not only aesthetically pleasing but also serves ecological purposes, aiding in daylighting, ventilation, and rainwater gathering, much like a traditional courtyard.
What sets the CETC Research Institute apart is its unique approach to spatial organization. Drawing from Chinese traditional village culture, the buildings are organized freely, creating various enclosed or open spatial layouts. This design promotes industrial agglomeration by providing a shared platform for high-tech companies, fostering a sense of community and collaboration.
To meet the requirements for forms and functions, the project employs cast-in-place reinforced concrete frame structure. The roof structure features cross-shaped beams, and anti-seismic joints are set between main buildings and the podium. The buildings are linked by east and west corridors, which adopt steel structure and sliding support. The lecture hall spans 25.2 meters, and the rooftop is made from steel-concrete beams.
The project, located at the intersection of Xiyou Road and Fangxing Avenue in Hefei City's High-tech Zone, spans an area of 69808 square meters. It serves as a landmark building cluster integrating science and technology research and development, system testing, system co-testing demonstration, and information center. The design process, which took place from 2014 to 2017, was a challenge in rendering complex technological R&D and manufacturing processes efficient while showing humanistic care.
The design team overcame this challenge by creating public facility and activity spaces to enhance users' sense of belonging and enrich daily activities. Centered on green open space, the project invents a poetic setting for working and production, full of a cultural vibe. Through green technologies, the project forms a modern industrial park, helpful for energy conservation and flexible development.
The CETC Research Institute by U A D is a remarkable example of how traditional architectural principles can be seamlessly integrated into modern design, creating spaces that are not only functional and efficient but also culturally rich and environmentally friendly. This project is a testament to the power of design in shaping our built environment and the way we interact with it.
